Psalm 74:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nAsaf–a composer of several psalms and a patriarch of a family of singers in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Communal Lament–This psalm contains teaching and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nAsaf composed this prophetic psalm as a prayer on behalf of those who are today in exile. He foresaw the calamity of the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) being destroyed and burned, and Israel\u2019s subsequent exile among the nations. In the bitterness of his heart he cries out, \u201cWhy, God, have You cast [us] off forever?\u201d<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-three verses, subdivided into three parts.
\nIn verse 1-11, the psalmist laments the victory of the wicked who have desecrated the Sanctuary and the name of God. He further describes the deeds of the wicked, and then directs a second lament towards God.
\nIn verses 12-17, he praises God and tells of His mighty deeds in days of Old.
\nIn verses 18-23, he prays for mercy, asking God not to allow the wicked nations to destroy the people of Israel.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nAgainst enemies and evil spirits–Verse 22 states: \u201cArise, God, defend Your own cause; remember Your scorn from the vile person all day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited in some congregations on the fast of Asarah B\u2019Tevet (Tenth of Tevet), upon the conclusion of Shacharit (morning service).
\nRecited in some congregations on the second day of Passover, upon the concussion of Shacharit.
\nVerse 2 is also found in Selichot (Penitential Service), immediately preceding Shema Koleinu (a responsive prayer beseeching God to hear our voice). Selichot are recited the week of Rosh HaShanah through Yom Kippur. Selichot are not recited on Rosh HaShanah proper. <\/p>\n
