Heinrich Sch\u00fctz (1585-1672), Herr, wenn ich nur Dich habe, \u201cYou guided me by Your counsel and led me toward honor\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heinrich II of the young Reuss dynasty, who ruled in the city of Gera (now in Thuringia, south of Leipzig) was a benevolent ruler according to the standards of hist time, who promoted education and religious toleration during the spread of the Reformation, and the beginning of the Thirty Years\u2019 War. On the other hand, he was obsessed with death, and with planning his own funeral ceremony and burial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After his death, in 1635, the composer Heinrich Sch\u00fctz who was a native of the area, was invited to compose a piece that would be based on verses from Holy Scripture, that the deceased had collected with the intention of using them as part of the funeral. Sch\u00fctz composed a piece in three parts, which comprise what is essentially the first German \u201crequiem,\u201d not based on the Catholic rite, but on German texts. Included in this work is a motet based on verses 25-26 from Psalm 73, in Martin Luther\u2019s German translation. The context of a funeral rite gives these verses a very direct, literal interpretation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sch\u00fctz is considered today to be the greatest early German Baroque composer, having brought to Germany genres and styles straight from Venice. The Venetian style is reflected in this short motet, written for a double choir, which, when performed live, encircle the listener with sound from all sides. In its harmonic nature too it is close to the \u201cvocal concerto\u201d style, which Sch\u00fctz brought from Italy and made his own most distinctive stylistic characteristic. The work has two parts, the first being devoted to verse 25, and the second to verse 26.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tendency to paint the words with the musical tones is also part of the Italian heritage. One example of this is vocalizing the word \u201cheaven\u201d with high notes, and the word \u201cearth\u201d with low tones. The archaic sound of the composition stems from the fact that Sch\u00fctz structured it on earlier scales, that didn\u2019t yet use the major-minor system that we are used to.<\/span><\/p>\n
