In I Kings 1, we learn about the tumultuous end to King David’s life. As he lay close to death, there was a fight among his followers as to which of his sons would ascend the throne: Solomon or Adonijah. Batsheba and Natan the prophet successfully lobby for the selection of Solomon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In I Kings 2, David lays out his instructions to Solomon. First he chastens him to follow God and the Torah. Next, he instructs him, in almost mafioso fashion, to take care of David\u2019s supporters and punish those who crossed him. In Psalm 72, he provides further instructions to Solomon. In the first seven verses, David tells Solomon to be a righteous judge and ruler of the people. There is no direct call to follow the Torah, but it is implied that that is the law he should follow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The remainder of the Psalm is a prayer that Solomon rule wisely and bring peace and prosperity to the land, that he be exalted by other rulers (with a reference to the “kings” of Sheba, when we know that it will actually be the Queen of Sheba who gets her own chapter in the story of King Solomon), and finally a general blessing to God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David’s blessing here helps round out the story we see in Kings. It also provides a different angle for us to see the relationship between father and son: one where David moves beyond a technical message into a more spiritual one. The two stories also help highlight the differences that we have seen in David’s own story as told in II Samuel and in Psalms: the great warrior of the prophets verses the spiritual poet of Psalms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
