\n<\/span>“<\/span>Hold it higher,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Let it light up the way for those who will follow,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Let it light up the way, for you<\/span>.”\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

They passed the torch to me \u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>How am I supposed to hold it?<\/span>
\n<\/span>My hands shake, in fear<\/span>
\n<\/span>I might drop it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And how am I supposed to gaze at its fire?<\/span>
\n<\/span>My eyes are weak,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Sensitive to bright flares and flames,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Used only to shadows and dusk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Run with the torch<\/span><\/em>,” <\/em>they shout at me.<\/span>
\n<\/span>How can I run<\/span>
\n<\/span>When my feet are tied?<\/span>
\n<\/span>And how can I untie the knots on these ropes<\/span>
\n<\/span>When one hand is holding a torch?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of a torch, I will strike a match.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Instead of running, I will stand.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Instead of raising it high, one hand will cup the match<\/span>
\n<\/span>To protect it from the wind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And I will pray<\/span>
\n<\/span>That its light will suffice<\/span>
\n<\/span>Until the dawn,<\/span>
\n<\/span>That its light will hold out<\/span>
\n<\/span>Until all my prayers are said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
