Psalm 72:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm when he passed the throne on to Solomon. In it, he blesses Solomon that he should be a fair and merciful judge of the people.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Royalty–This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nKing David composed this psalm in honor of his son Solomon, whom he crowned near the end of his life. With the influence of Ruach HaKodesh<\/em> (Divine Inspiration), David foresaw that Solomon would ask God to grant him a knowing and heedful heart in judgement, and he prayed that God would in turn grant him the Torah wisdom to rule justly.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty verses, subdivided into five parts. The last verse serves as a formal ending for the second section of the Book of Tehillim. It thus concludes with the words \u201cCompleted are the prayers of David, son of Jesse.\u201d
\nIn verses 1-7, King David opens with a prayer to God that He will direct the new king to judge righteously.
\nIn verses 8-11, he describes the king\u2019s greatness.
\nIn verses 12-15, he describes how the king helps the poor.
\nIn verses 16-17, he asks of God to bestow His blessings upon the land and the king.
\nIn verses 18 and 19, he concludes by blessing God.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo find favor among others.
\nTo prevent poverty–Verse 2 states: \u201cMay he judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities: <\/em>
\nThe Kings of Sheba–perhaps a reference to the story of Queen of Sheba (Rashi).
\nThe Kings of Tarshish–they had a fleet at sea, along with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the fleet of Tarshish would come to the Port of Yafo (Jaffa) bearing gold, silver, ivory, monkeys, and parrots.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 5: \u201cSo that they will fear You as long as the sun is upon them and as long as the moon is before them, throughout all generations.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 29b, deduces from this verse that it is meritorious to recite Shacharit (morning service) at sunrise. (See Talmud Shabbat 11b for further elucidation).
\nVerse 17: \u201cMay His name endure forever, as long as the sun, may His name be perpetuated.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 54a, states that the phrase \u201cMay His name be eternal\u201d refers to Messiah. (See Talmud Shabbat 118b for further elucidation).<\/p>\n
