Statements such as \u201cDo not cast me off in old age\u201d (9), \u201cand even in hoary old age do not forsake me\u201d (18) suggest that it was composed by an elderly psalmist retrospectively. Indeed, Radak\u2019s assignment of the psalm to an elderly David reflects this consideration. (See our citations from the commentary of Rashbam to chapters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/636\/post\/85044\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/637\/post\/85093\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm was recited in proximity to the preceding one, which is why it has no superscription such as \u201cTo the leader\u201d or \u201cA psalm.\u201d It was written when [David] was fleeing from his son Absalom; the proof is in the verse \u201cdo not cast me off in old age,\u201d because when he fled from Saul, he was not an old man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In v.3, the psalmist calls God his \u201crock and fortress\u201d (Alter: \u201crock and bastion\u201d); it is noteworthy that in 4 of the 5 times that the term \u201cmy rock\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sal`i<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) appears in Tanakh, it is accompanied by \u201cmy fortress\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metzudati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). That coupling is often indicative of what we have previously referred to as a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hendiadys<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Greek for \u201ctwo that are one,\u201d meaning that the two words should be treated as a single compound noun rather than two separate nouns joined by a conjunction. On the analogy, then, of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed ve\u2019emet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> a true act of grace (rather than a gracious act <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a truth) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ger v\u2019toshav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a foreign resident (rather than a stranger and a resident), we would translate <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sal`i u-m\u2019tzudati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cmy redoubtable fortress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appearance in the very next verse of \u201crescue me\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palteini<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), recalls \u201cthe song that David sang on the day God delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and the hand of Saul\u201d (2 Samuel 22:1), in which the compound \u201cmy redoubtable fortress\u201d is followed immediately by \u201cmy rescuer\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u-m\u2019falti<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Moreover, the use of these expressions in these two locations strengthens the exegetes\u2019 suppositions regarding the authorship of our psalm and its situation towards the end of David\u2019s life,
