In Psalm 71, King David repeats references to different moments in his life to show God that he has followed and trusted in Him throughout his life:<\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 5: \u201cMy Master, My God my trust since youth.\u201d <\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 6: \u201con You I have relied from birth, from my mother’s womb You drew me” <\/span>
\n<\/span>Verse 9 “Do not cast me off in time of old age, when my strength fails do not forsake me.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The last verse is repeated on Yom Kippur in the afternoon service. Growing up, one of the elderly members of our congregation would lead that service. I always remembered them getting emotional when reciting this verse. When reading this chapter, you can really see the full picture of someone looking back on their life and dedication to God and praying to God to take this lifelong service into account in their old age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another insight into this chapter: David noting that even in his mother’s womb he would rely on God evokes the image that opens the book of Jeremiah centuries later. In Jeremiah 1:5: \u201cBefore I created you in the womb, I selected you; before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet concerning the nations.” Perhaps Jeremiah crafts his opening prophecy referencing this psalm as a way to ask God for his protection during his difficult service as a prophet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
