David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nDavid might have written this psalm when he was elderly and fleeting from Absalom, his son. In it, he praises God for giving him the strength to escape in his weak and frail condition.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Individual Lament&#8211;This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nThe psalmist speaks here about the tragedy of Absalom, an enemy and pursuer of his own father, King David. Nonetheless, declares the author, God protects the oppressed and remains a refuge for young and old alike.<\/p>\n<p>This psalm and the previous one are considered one unit divided into two sections. The previous chapter consists of six verses, and this chapter consists of twenty-four verses.<br \/>\nIn chapter 70, verses 2-6 and chapter 71, verses 1-13, the psalmist prays for salvation and describes how his rescue will bring disappointment to his enemies and joy to the righteous.<br \/>\nIn chapter 71, verses 14-24, he thanks God for his salvation, and vows to tell of God\u2019s wonders to the coming generation. He further vows to praise God with singing and the playing of musical instruments.<\/p>\n<p><em>Musical Instruments:<\/em><br \/>\n\u05e0\u05d1\u05dc&#8211;<em>Nevel<\/em>&#8211;A Large Handheld Lyre&#8211;played by plucking with fingers.<br \/>\n\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05e8&#8211;<em>Kinor<\/em>&#8211;A Small Handheld Harp&#8211;played with a plectrum (pick).<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say<\/em><br \/>\nTo be saved from being imprisoned&#8211;Verse 2 states: \u201cIn Your righteousness save me and rescue me, incline Your ear to me and deliver me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\nVerse 9 comprise one of the verses of Slichot (Penitential Service), recited the week of Rosh HaShanah through Yom Kippur.
