The Hebrew verb here is <em>yashuvu<\/em>, \u201clet them turn back.\u201d Turning back on the heels (singular in the Hebrew) is an understandable image that jibes with the falling back or retreating of the previous line. Psalm 40:16 reads <em>yashomu<\/em>, \u201cLet them be devastated,\u201d which does not make altogether good sense with \u201con the heels of their shame.\u201d One suspects that a scribe made an error in the process of copying Psalm 70.
