May Your enemies be scattered, and may Your foes flee before You\u201d (Numbers 10:35).\u00a0 The exegetes assumed that God\u2019s enemies were the enemies of Israel but differed in their identification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a very important psalm. Most exegetes interpreted it as regarding the revelation of the Torah\u2026 but that does not suit the context [which would require] to have the crossing of the sea at the Exodus from Egypt follow their entry into the Land [of Israel], which is unsuitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my opinion, it was composed by David because he fought against the uncircumcised. Most of his army was made up of Judah, Benjamin, Zebulun, and Naftali, who showed valor in battle, so he mentioned them. The proof is that he began with \u201cArise,\u201d like Moses\u2019s words \u201cArise O Lord,\u201d which meant that the enemies would flee as soon as [the Ark] arose, since arising displays valor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After examining the details of the psalm and its arrangement, I think that it was composed due to the many wars [David] fought against Philistines, Moabites, Arameans, and Edomites, as reported in 2 Samuel. As detailed here, the battles were fought in Trans-Jordan near Mt. Bashan\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the battle, the enemies attempted to ascend the mountain but failed. Since God appeared to Israel in these places in ancient times with wonders and signs\u2014between the revelation of the Torah and the wars against the Amorites\u2014the poet embellished the poem with adornments of those ancient miracles to the extent that he fluctuated between the past and the present, describing past miracles as still prevailing in those locations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I would hasten to add an additional moral dimension: God\u2019s enemies are the wicked, no matter to which nation they belong.
