The first king of Israel was from the tribe of Benjamin. The princes of Judah refers to David. But what about the references to Naphtali and Zebulun?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zebulun is usually paired with Issaschar. Zebuluun is known as the merchant tribe and Issaschar the studious and agricultural tribe. The two tribes are geographically close, but except for joining Gideon and the tribe of Asher in battle in the book of Judges, they didn&#8217;t interact much. Zebulun, like Judah, was a son of Leah, while Naphtali was the son of Bilha- Rachel\u2019s maid. So it can&#8217;t be that David is picking on a tribe from each of Jacob&#8217;s wives. It is possible David is trying to appease dominant factions of the North that may have been more loyal to Saul&#8217;s line that is not recorded in the text. Or perhaps David is simply mentioning tribes that helped him in this particular battle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we do know is that this shout out, as it were, defies what is written in the text. Perhaps then that is the purpose of including them in the end; to make the reader
