Psalm 68:<\/p>\n

Author<\/em>:
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

Genre<\/em>:
\nPsalm of Praise–This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\n

Chapter<\/em> Summary:
\nKing David composed this psalm as a prayer for success in all his wars. According to the view that this group of psalms is alluding to our present exile, David is referring to the wars that God will wage for Israel prior to the ultimate redemption.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of thirty-six verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves a heading.
\nIn verses 2-7, King David appeals to God to arise, and for the congregation to then praise HIm.
\nIn verses 8-24, he recounts how the revelation of God\u2019s presence leads to victory.
\nIn verses 25-36, he portrays the festive procession accompanying the Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark) as it was brought into the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple). He concludes by calling upon the nation to offer praise to God and bless Him.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo exorcise an evil spirit–Verse 7 states: \u201cGod settles [lonely] individuals into a household. He brings out prisoners at appropriate times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillm:<\/em>
\nVerse 10: \u201cBountiful rain did You pour down, God; when Your inheritance was weary, You established it firmly.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 88b, allegorically explains that this verse refers to God\u2019s reviving of the Israelites after their souls were separated from their bodies upon hearing the voice of the Lord at Mount Sinai.
\nVerse 12: \u201cMy Master gave the word, its announcers were a great host.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 88a, deduces that \u201ceach of the commandments that were uttered by God was heard in seventy languages.\u201d
\nVerse 13: \u201cKings of hosts flee.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Shabbat 88a, allegorically explains that the souls of the Israelites at Mount Sinai retreated twelve mil (a biblical distance approximating a mile) from Mount Sinai when they heard God\u2019s voice.
\nVerse 14: \u201cwings of dove covered with silver and her pinions with the shimmer of gold.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 53b, states: \u201cJust as a dove escapes danger only with its wings, so too the Israelites escape danger only by the performance of mitzvot (see Talmud, Shabbat 49a and 103a, for further elucidation).
\nVerse 15: \u201cWhen the Almighty scatter kings therein, as snowflakes in Tzalmon.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 15b, explains allegorically that the fires of Geihinom (Hell) are cooled for those who recite every word of the Shema carefully.
