  1. An echo of the priestly blessing<\/em>. The background to verse 2 is the special priestly blessing with which the priests would bless the people: \u201cThe LORD bless you and protect you!The LORD deal kindly and graciously with you! The LORD bestow His favor upon you and grant you peace!\u201d (Num 6:24-26). That special blessing for Israel is presented here as intended for all the nations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Simple math<\/em>. 8 verses. The words \u201cbless us\u201d (<\/span>yevarechenu<\/span><\/em>) appear three times; \u201cpraise You\u201d (<\/span>yoducha<\/span><\/em>) four times, \u201cpeoples\u201d (<\/span>amim<\/span><\/em>) five times, \u201cnations\u201d (<\/span>le\u2019umim<\/span><\/em>) twice and \u201cnations\u201d (<\/span>goyim<\/span><\/em>) once, and \u201cland\u201d (<\/span>eretz<\/span><\/em>) four times. These add up to a universal song of praise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The psalm of the menorah<\/em>. A psalm with 7 verses (not counting the introductory heading) was given mystical significance by the kabbalists, and there arose a custom to write it in the form of a menorah with seven branches, and say it every day of the seven weeks between Pesach and Shavuot as part of the counting of the omer.
