Our psalmist, identified in the superscription as David himself, expressed his gratitude to God for serving as his refuge, his \u201cmighty fortress,\u201d when he was confronted by \u201cthe enemy\u201d (4). He pleaded with God to let him \u201cdwell in Your tent forever\u201d and to shelter \u201cunder Your protecting wings\u201d (5). While \u201ctent\u201d is usually a poetic epithet for the Temple\u2014cf. 15:1: \u201cLord, who will dwell in Your tent and who will reside on Your holy mountain\u201d\u2014if it is indeed a Davidic composition, it may well refer to the Temple\u2019s predecessor, the Tabernacle, which actually was a tent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Towards the end, however, the psalmist put in what appears to be a plea for someone other than himself: \u201cAdd days to the days of the king; may his years extend through generations; may he dwell in God\u2019s presence forever; appoint steadfast love to guard him\u201d (7-8). The exegetes were alert to this anomaly and resolved it in different ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi, accepting the authorship of King David, addressed it from within the context of rabbinic folklore according to which Adam, who was supposed to live 1,000 years, donated 70 years of his life (he died at 930) to David, who would otherwise have been stillborn. He had David say, so to speak: \u201cIf I am fated to die young [at the hands of my enemies], add years to my life that I may live until seventy, which is the extent of [two] generations.\u201d Radak, while allowing for that\u00a0 possibility, added an alternative: \u201cIf this is David speaking of himself, having been anointed king he prayed that he lives longer than his allotted lifespan. However, if he was speaking about the Exile, the king is the Messiah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet another alternative is based on a passage in the Talmud that stipulates that \u201cthe rabbis are called kings\u201d (Gittin 62a).
