In this psalm David thanks God for acting as his protector and savior. In verse four David prays: ” for you have been a refuge for me, a tower of strength, <\/span>migdal oz<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>in the face of the enemy.”\u00a0 This phrase <\/span>migdal oz<\/em> <\/span>is used later on in the book of Proverbs (18:10): “The name of the LORD is a tower of strength To which the righteous man runs and is safe.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The origin of the phrase is from Judges 9:51, the only other time it is used. In that story Abimelech is laying siege to the city of Thebez. As he enters the city, the inhabitants rush to the <\/span>migdal oz<\/span><\/em>, the fortified tower,<\/span> in the city center. As Abimelech approaches the tower, a woman pushes a mill stone from an upper window crushing his skull. This is a change from the previous chapter in Judges, where Abimelech successfully burns down a tower and the secret tunnel below.<\/span><\/p>\n

David picks up this image in Psalms to describe God for a reason. Unlike a regular defensive structure, the <\/span>migdal oz<\/em> <\/span>represents a defensive as well as offensive position. The normal defensive tower mentioned in Chapter 50 of Judges provided limited protection, and was ultimately defeated. The <\/span>migdal oz<\/em> <\/span>did both. The people were protected inside, but they were also able to defeat their enemy by dropping the millstone. David’s prayer here is therefore not just that God acts as a defensive shield, but that at the same time God will attack David’s enemies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":84632,"id":84632,"title":"ps61-migdal
