Anton\u00edn Dvo\u0159\u00e1k (1841-1904), Biblical Songs, Op.99 No.6<\/span><\/p>\n

The song cycle \u201cBiblical Songs\u201d was composed by Dvo\u0159\u00e1k in 1894 during a three-year stay in America. It is different from other famous works he wrote there (such as his \u201cNew World Symphony\u201d for instance) in that he makes no effort to integrate any American idioms, and the work is 100% Slavic in expression.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was written by a man who was in mourning over the grave illness of his father far away, and over the death of the conductor and close friend Hans von B\u00fclow. Above all else, the work represents the longings that Dvo\u0159\u00e1k felt for his homeland, and the traditional Christian values upon which he had been raised. We have already explored one of these songs <\/span>(#8, psalm 25<\/span><\/a>). The cycle is recognized to be the apex of his work in the genre of the art song.<\/span><\/p>\n

The text of the \u201cBiblical Songs\u201d is based on a 16th century translation of the Bible to Czech, but it feels to the contemporary listener more like a paraphrase. The sixth song is based on a collection of verses from two psalms: 61 (verses 2,4,5) and 63 (2, 5, 6). Both psalms are songs of yearning for God, and Dvo\u0159\u00e1k unites them by means of a very simple, pleasant melody, which remains almost entirely unchanged throughout the work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The orchestra arrangement is not Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s, and it is recommended to look for a performance in the original with piano, in order to experience the pure heavenly sound that was the composer\u2019s intent.<\/span><\/p>\n
