Psalm 61:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm when he was in exile hiding from Saul. In it, he prays to God to help him return to Jerusalem so that he can continue building the foundation of the Temple.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nKing David composed this psalm when he was being pursued by those who sought to take his life. He prays for tranquility in his personal life and in his kingdom. Looking forward, he also adds a prayer concerning the future exile of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of nine verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-5, King David begs God for protection from his enemies.
\nIn verses 6-9, he asks to be allowed to conquer the land granted as an inheritance to the Children of Israel, and further prays for his welfare as king.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor one who is apprehensive about going home–Verse 5 states: \u201cI will dwell in Your Tent forever, I will take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 8: \u201cMay he be enthroned forever before God, kindness and trust appoint that they may preserve him.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Eiruvin 86a, states: \u201cRabbi Akiva and Rebbe (Rabbi Yehudah haNasi) honored the wealthy who assisted the poor, per the inference of Rava bar Mari [from this verse].\u201d Those who helped the poor are compared to those who dwell in God\u2019s presence, as they are indeed truly spiritually wealthy.\u201d<\/p>\n
