One can ignore the complex and sophisticated six-voiced structure, and listen just to the voice of David in the “michtam” that plays just like a folk song, and with an especially delicate sadness.
The work is designated an “anthem,” similar to the one we presented in chapter 54. This is actually the English Baroque version of the multi-vocal motet from the Reniassance.

Purcell skips the two opening, more historical verses, of the psalm, and begins his work with verses 3-4. One might expect a particularly striking musical arrangement for the earthquake scene (“You have made the land quake; You have torn it open. Mend its fissures, for it is collapsing” – verse 4), but the King James Version with which Purcell worked, was not quite as violent: “Thou hast made the earth to tremble; thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.”

Thus the call “O God” wanders among the voices in a particularly dramatic way, while the description of the earthquake becomes more complex, as the first part reaches its conclusion.

The second part of the composition is devoted to the two final verses, 13-14, first in dialogue between groups of soloists. The choir sings in unison in the conclusion, on a note of hope, and faith in God, closing with “amen.”

Henry Purcell, “O God Thou hast cast us out,”
Kamerkoor Venus, Pieterskerk, Utrecht, Netherlands, 2011

"":null
