David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\nDavid wrote this psalm when his armies were being defeated by the armies of Aram and Edom. In it, he prays to God to make his soldiers victorious in battle.<\/p>\n<p><em>Genre: <\/em><br \/>\nPsalm of Communal Lament&#8211;This psalm focuses on expressing deep sorrow for the travails of a nation and as a group asking for God\u2019s blessing or intervention.<\/p>\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\nHere, David speaks of the wars he waged against Israel\u2019s belligerent neighbors. He also addresses his deliverance from these enemies, acknowledging that his successes come from the hand of the Almighty.<\/p>\n<p>This psalm consists of fourteen verses, subdivided into three parts.<br \/>\n1 &amp; 2 serve as a heading.<br \/>\nIn verses 3-6, King David bemoans his defeat in a difficult war.<br \/>\nIn verses 7-10, he prays for the fulfillment of a prophetic promise of salvation and endurance in the Holy Land, and further petitions God on behalf of the people of Israel.<br \/>\nIn verses 11-14, he expresses his trust that God will indeed bring defeat upon Israel\u2019s enemies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Technical Terminology:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Al Shushan Eidut<\/em>&#8211;a musical instrument shaped like a rose; alternatively, a reference to the tune or melody in which this chapter was sung.<br \/>\n<em>Michtam<\/em>&#8211;an engraving, perhaps of simple fashion (Targum Yonatan); alternatively, made of fine gold (Ibn Ezra).<br \/>\n<em>Lelameid<\/em>&#8211;To instruct.<br \/>\n<em>Selah<\/em>&#8211;While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\nWhen going to war (say 7 times)&#8211;Verses 13 and 14 state: \u201cGive us help against the adversary; futile is the help of man. Through God we will emerge with might and He will trample our adversaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Biblical Personalities: <\/em><br \/>\nEdom&#8211;descendants of Eisav (Esau), the brother of Yaakov (Jacob). The sibling rivalry between them persisted for centuries, most strongly expressed when the Edomites looted Jerusalem as it was being overrun by the Babylonians. <br \/>\nMenashe, Ephraim, and Judah&#8211;three of the twelve tribes of Israel. Menasheh and Ephraim were the sons of Yosef (Joseph), and King David himself was a descendant of Yehudah (Judah).<br \/>\nMoab&#8211;biblical enemies of the Israelites, located on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea.<br \/>\nPelishtim&#8211;Philistines&#8211;an enemy nation that dwelled on the southwestern coast of Israel.<br \/>\nYoav&#8211;Joab&#8211;King David\u2019s chief general.<\/p>\n<p><em>Biblical Places:<\/em><br \/>\nAram Naharayim&#8211;a city-state bordering on two rivers, one of which was the Euphrates. It is identified with Mesopotamia, north of Damascus.<br \/>\nAram Zobah&#8211;a city-state northwest of Damascus, identified with Aleppo of today, located in Southern Syria. Its king, Hadadezer bar Rehob, allied with Ammon against David, and Arameans from across the Euphrates came to Hadadezer&#8217;s aid.
