  1. For the leader; on shushan eduth<\/em> (\u201cthe rose of testimony\u201d). What are roses doing in the psalm. Some suggest that the \u201cshushan<\/em>\u201d was a musical instrument of some sort, or the place in the temple where the chorus stood to sing, next to the pillars that were engraved with roses.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Possible background<\/em>. What historical events are in the background to this psalm? The heading sets the context as part of David\u2019s wars. Scholars and commentators suggest that it might have been composed during a period of instability viz. The Edomites, such as during the time of Solomon, and the enemy \u201cHadad the Edomite\u201d who rebelled against him (I Kings 11:14-22), or the days of Yoram, king of Judah (II Kings 8:20-22) or the reign of Ahaz (II Kings 16:6, II Chron. 28:17).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cA banner for rallying\u201d<\/em> (<\/span>nes litnoses<\/span><\/em>). This isn\u2019t just any old flag to march behind. If you have \u201ca banner for rallying\u201d (<\/span>nes litnoses<\/span><\/em>) – you are marching victoriously – see the tenor of things in verses 8-11.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Regards from Bar Kochba<\/em>. The Talmud attributes to Bar Kochba the motto, \u201cBut You have rejected us, O God; God, You do not march with our armies\u201d (verse 10). However, as opposed to the intent in the psalm, which is lamenting the situation and petitioning God to change his stance, Bar Kochba accepts as his starting point that God has abandoned the fray. He then assumes the mantle of responsibility for himself and his troops, and to God he says: \u201cDon\u2019t help – but don\u2019t stand in the
