One of the most pronounced themes in the Book of Psalms is deliverance, particularly from enemies; <\/span>by some estimates, accounting for nearly 30 psalms<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our psalm presents itself as David\u2019s appeal to be rescued from his major antagonist, King Saul, \u201cwhen Saul sent men to watch his house in order to put him to death\u201d (1). Compare: \u201cSaul sent messengers to David’s house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning\u201d (1 Samuel 19:11). That plot was thwarted by David\u2019s wife Michal who enabled him to flee in the night and evade capture and death.<\/span><\/p>\n

The speed with which Michal acted and with which David made his escape would appear to preclude a hiatus long enough to accommodate the composition of this psalm so either David wrote it as a retrospective, from a vantage point of comparative\u2014or even complete\u2014safety, or, as we have already suggested, it is not Davidic. If the latter, then someone who found himself in similar mortal jeopardy \u201criffed\u201d on the theme of David\u2019s rescue to express gratitude for his own. The attribution to David is either an acknowledgement of his inspiration or an erroneous attribution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another feature of the psalm that seems to argue against the historicity of its title is the section that describes David\u2019s enemies in terns that are inconsistent with the facts of 1 Samuel 19, such as: \u201cThey come each evening growling like dogs, roaming the city. They wander in search of food; and whine if they are not satisfied\u201d (15-16). Malbim seems to have attempted a coalescence of both the general and specific possibilities, writing:<\/span><\/p>\n

This psalm is divisible into three parts. First, he spoke about the time he stood before Saul who threw a spear at him and God saved him (1-7). Then, he spoke of the evening that [Saul] sent soldiers to guard [David\u2019s] home to kill him and God let him know about it and he prayed to be rescued from them (15). Finally, he cursed [all] his enemies (18).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
