  1. Another contextual heading.<\/em> The heading of the psalm connects it to an event in David\u2019s life: \u201cwhen Saul sent men to watch his house in order to put him to death.\u201d The full story at 1 Sam. 19 tells how Saul\u2019s men wait for David all night at his house in order to catch and kill him in the morning, and how David is saved by Saul\u2019s daughter, Michal, his wife, who helps him escape from the window in the middle of the night.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. I\u2019m innocent!<\/em> In verses 4-5, the psalmist emphasizes his innocence. This gives him the confidence to believe in the justness of his being rescued, and also his insistence in urging God to do so.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Individual or everybody?<\/em> Does the psalm deal with the distress of the individual – or of the collective? The first part of the psalm is written in the singular, but verses 6 and 9 speak of \u201cnations.\u201d What do you think?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. \u201cDo not kill them lest my people be unmindful\u201d<\/em> Verse 12 has had an important role in Christian theology, since the days of St. Augustine (one of the Church Fathers, 4th C. CE). According to him, the ongoing oppressed situation of the Jews is the real proof of the truth of Christianity. Hence, \u201cDo not kill them lest my people [= the Christians] be unmindful\u201d and make sure to keep them oppressed:\u00a0 \u201cwith Your power make wanderers of them; bring them low, O our shield, the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Two choruses, the two main themes\u2026<\/em> Two sorts of \u201cchoruses\u201d repeat in the psalm. One describes the pathetic nature of the enemy (verses 7-8, and 15-16) and the other expresses the faith the psalmist has in God (10 and 18).
