In the event, with the decisive help of his wife, Michal, Saul\u2019s daughter, David manages to escape. The tenuous connection with our psalm is the speaker\u2019s sense that his life is threatened (for example, verse 4, \u201cthey lie in wait for my life\u201d). But as the poem unfolds, it looks as though physical attack is actually a metaphor for vicious slander.
