David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

When and Why:
David wrote this psalm after he escaped from the guards who Saul sent to break into his house at night and murder him.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
King David composed this psalm after Saul had dispatched agents to watch his house all night and kill him in the morning. He offers thanks to God for the miracle of being given enough time to escape his pursuers.

This psalm consists of eighteen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
In verses 2-10, King David requests of God to be delivered from evildoers, and then prays for the downfall of wicked traitors.
In verses 11-18, King David expresses his trust that God will indeed bring about the downfall of his enemies, and further declares that their punishment should be exile and death. He concludes this section with a song of victory and thanksgiving.

Technical Terminology:
Al Tashcheit–Do not destroy. This phrase is perhaps the author’s, or printer’s, notation indicating that the associated manuscript was from another source, and should not be thrown away or destroyed.
Michtam–An engraving, perhaps of simple fashion (Targum Yonatan); alternatively, of fine gold (Ibn Ezra).
Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, “Selah” may mean “everlasting”.

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:
Against the evil inclination (say 3 times daily)–Verse 2 states: “Rescue me from my enemies, my God; from those who rise up against me, strengthen me.”

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
