Awake, O my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will wake the dawn\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a`ira shachar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> 8-9). At first blush, this looks like an error; surely it is not the psalmist who awakens the dawn. Perhaps he awakens <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dawn, but that would mean that the dawn awakens him, not vice versa. The history of commentary here is, again, illuminating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aramaic Targum rendered our phrase: \u201cI will wake up for prayer at daybreak.\u201d Ibn Ezra, too, emphasized the intransitive nature of the verb<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while Radak combined both meanings: \u201cWhen I awaken myself at dawn to praise Your name with [these instruments], I will tell them to awaken, too.\u201d Malbim is the only one who seems in tune with our translation,\u00a0 by giving it a figurative interpretation: \u201cThe sun of success that had set heretofore will start to shine. I will awaken the sun of success\u2026, i.e., [King] Saul himself will recognize [David\u2019s] righteousness and acknowledge that he will truly become king.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi, here, introduced a most endearing legend, namely, that David hung a harp above his bed whose strings would be strummed by the wind at midnight to awaken him to study Torah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiously, Alter translated the beginning of v. 9 as \u201cAwake, O lyre,\u201d justifying it by pointing to the Syriac Peshitta (a dialect of Aramaic) that reads <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kinori<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u2019vodi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
