Psalm 57 claims to take place in a cave. As David was running away from King Saul, he hid in a cave. King Saul entered the cave to relieve himself. The end of the story has David refusing the advice of his entourage and declining to kill Saul. Instead, he cuts a piece of his garment and allows Saul to leave the tent. When Saul is a safe distance away, David emerges from the cave and holds Saul&#8217;s cut cloak in the air to show him that he means him no harm. He had no intention of killing him even if he could.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalm tells a slightly different story. It&#8217;s clear that at first, David was in a perilous state. Inside the cave he writes this psalm asking God for help. It is surprising then that the word that appears often in this psalm is the word sky. The word sky appears four times (and the word dawn appears once).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deep in the cave, with no view of the sky, David references the sky multiple times. This is not a mistake. In the darkness of the cave, the symbol of safety and freedom is the clear sky.
