Psalm 57:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm after he escaped a near encounter with Saul, who had unknowingly entered the cave in which David was hiding.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nHiding in the depths of the cave where an unsuspecting Saul had come to relieve himself, David prays that he not be destroyed.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twelve verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-5, King David calls out to God to save him from his enemies.
\nIn verses 6-12, he expresses thanks for his salvation.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\n\u05d0\u05dc \u05ea\u05e9\u05d7\u05ea–Al Tashcheit<\/em>–Do not destroy. This phrase is perhaps the author\u2019s, or printer\u2019s, notation indicating that the associated manuscript was from another source, and should not be thrown away or destroyed.
\n\u05de\u05db\u05ea\u05dd–Michtam<\/em>–An engraving, perhaps of simple fashion (Targum Yonatan); alternatively, of fine gold (Ibn Ezra).
\n\u05e1\u05dc\u05d4–Selah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor success and good fortune–Verse 4 states: \u201cHe will send from heaven and deliver me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 3 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShanah.<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:<\/em>
\nSaul–the first King of Israel. After Saul disobeyed God\u2019s command to destroy all of Amalek, the prophet Samuel dethroned Saul and anointed David to start a new monarchic line.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em>
\nVerse 9:: \u201cAwake my soul, awake lyre and harp, I will awaken the dawn.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 4a, deduces from here that King David had servants play a lyre and a harp in order to awaken him at midnight from his sleep. In contrast to other kings who were awakened by the dawn, David would personally \u201cawaken the dawn\u201d himself.
\nVerse 11: \u201cFor great until the heavens is Your kindness.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Pesachim 50b, delineates two levels of mitzvah performance. This verse refers to those who have ulterior motives in their worship of God, and worship \u201cuntil the heavens.\u201d In contrast, Psalm 108 speaks of those who perform a mitzvah for its own sake, for no purpose other than to fulfill the will of God, and who recognize that \u201cyour faithfulness is higher than the heavens.\u201d<\/p>\n
