  1. Historical header<\/em>. The heading of the psalm connects it to an event in the life of David, while he was fleeing from Saul, and requested shelter with a false identity, from the Philistines. But he ended up being identified by them: \u201cwhen the Philistines seized him in Gath.\u201d You can read the full story at 1 Sam. 21:11-16.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The mysterious mute dove<\/em>. We don\u2019t know who or what the \u201cmute dove\u201d is. Some surmise that it was a familiar song, and thus the heading is a musical instruction to the performers to play it like that song. Others think that it refers more to the state of the psalmist.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. All day<\/em> long. 3 times throughout the psalm, in describing the distress of the psalmist, the phrase \u201call day long\u201d appears (verses 2,3,6). Its repetition helps us identify with the feeling of repression and isolation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. A psalm for the road<\/em>. The semantic field of \u201cwalking\u201d is present in the psalm, both as image and reality. Others watch \u201cmy every move\u201d (7); \u201cmy wanderings\u201d (9), salvation is \u201cFor You have saved\u2026 my foot from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life\u201d (14).<\/span><\/li>\n
