Psalm 56:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm after he fled to Philistia to escape Saul. In Philistia he pretended to be demented so that Goliath would not murder him.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nKing David calls out to God for assistance upon being captured by the Philistines. He concludes with a request that his prayer be accepted by the Almighty, and a vow in which he thanks God for salvation.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of fourteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading.<\/p>\n

In verses 2-9, the Psalmist prays to God for salvation from his captors.
\nIn verses 10-12, he expresses his trust that the day will come when his enemies will retreat.
\nIn verses 13 & 14, King David affirms that, on that day, he will fulfill his vows of thanksgiving to the Almighty.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\nAl yonat eilem rechokim<\/em>–Over a silent dove in the distance (perhaps a reference to King David himself).
\nMichtam<\/em>–an engraving, perhaps of simple fashion (Targum Yonatan); alternatively, made of fine gold (Ibn Ezra).<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor someone bound in chains–Verse 1 states: \u201cWhen the Philistines seized him in Gath.\u201d
\nTo fight the evil inclination–Verse 10 states: \u201cThen will my enemies turn back on the day that I call out; for this I know, that God is for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biblical Personalities:<\/em>
\nPhilistines–an enemy nation that dwelled on the southwestern coast of Israel.<\/p>\n

Biblical Places:<\/em>
\nGath–one of the five Philistine city-states. The other four were Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Ekron. <\/p>\n
