A verse in our psalm provoked the following Talmudic discussion:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rabbis did not know what was meant by, \u201cCast upon the Lord your <\/span>yehab<\/span><\/em> and he will sustain you\u201d (Ps. 55:23). Said Rabbah b. Bar Hanah: One day I was travelling with a certain Arab and was carrying a load, and he said to me, Lift up your <\/span>yehab<\/span><\/em> and put it on [one of] the camels. (BT Megillah 18a)<\/span><\/p>\n

The inference that <\/span>yehab<\/span><\/em> is a burden is reflected in the JPS translation: \u201cCast your burden (<\/span>y\u2019hav\u2019kha<\/span><\/em>) on the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous man collapse.\u201d The Jerusalem Talmud adduces a particular lesson from this verse: \u201cIf a mortal bothers his patron excessively, the latter may just abandon him. God, however, is otherwise: Whatever you bother Him with, He accepts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Midrash Tehillim (22:9: \u201cLet him commit himself to the LORD; let Him rescue him, let Him save him, for He is pleased with him\u201d) utilizes a similar analogy, but with a keener theological moral: \u201cA prince was given a beam to carry. When his father saw him, he said: Place what you need upon me to bear. So did God say: Place your sins upon me and I will bear them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Theologian Gary Anderson, author of <\/span>Sin: A History<\/span><\/em> (New Haven: Yale, 2009) who wrote with a thorough knowledge of biblical Hebrew and considerable erudition in rabbinic literature, <\/span>showed how the Old Testament concept of <\/span>sin<\/span> (<\/span>cheit\u2019<\/span><\/em>)<\/em> as a <\/span>burden<\/span><\/em> changed, in the New Testament, into the concept of <\/span>sin<\/span> as a debt. (When <\/span>sin<\/span> is viewed as a <\/span>burden<\/span><\/em>, people want to be relieved of it through sacrifice.<\/span> As a debt<\/em> borne by an individual, however, the tendency is to seek to repay it.) Our Midrash is clearly in the Jewish
