Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly: Psalmus Hungaricus, Op. 13<\/span><\/p>\n

Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly\u2019s (1881-1967) first religious work was written in 1923 in honor of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the unification of the two cities Buda and Pest, that were unified into Budapest. Also heard for the first time at those festivities was B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k\u2019s \u201cDance Suite.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two composers were partners in a comprehensive ethno-musicological research project, of the music of farmers in Hungary, Romania and the other Balkn\u00a0 countries. The research influenced their work greatly, if differently. As opposed to Bart\u00f3k who became a modernist, Kod\u00e1ly remained loyal to romantic values, and melodies in the style of folk tunes explicitly glorified his musical inspiration in a popular idiom.<\/span><\/p>\n

The entire work is based on a Hungarian paraphrase of Psalm 55, that was written originally in Latin in the 16th century. Kod\u00e1ly translates King David\u2019s travails into the political situation of Hungary, where following World War I, was left with a small part of the territory that they saw as the Magyar homeland.<\/span><\/p>\n

The choir begins in the role of the narrator, who builds on verse 1 to a whole story of David being pursued by people he had originally trusted. Then the tenor gives voice to the cry of David to his God, a cry which echoes over three large symphonic movements. The music is very enjoyable even without understanding the lyrics, but with the text in front of you the experience takes on added meaning, which connects the liturgy to the politics of the period.<\/span><\/p>\n
