The Masoretic Text reads <em>yishma\u2019 \u2018el weya\u2019anem weyoshev qedem<\/em>, literally, and unintelligibly, \u201cGod hears and answers them and is seated as of old.\u201d In the reconstruction, the first two words and the last two remain unchanged, but they are constructed as gentilic names rather than as references to God, and <em>weya\u2019anem<\/em>, is amended to <em>weya\u2019lam<\/em>. <em>Jalam<\/em> is mentioned in Genesis 36:5 as one of the peoples descended from Esau.<\/p>\n<p>From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 3: Writings, W.
