Psalm 55:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nKing David–the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\nDavid wrote this psalm after he was forced to escape Jerusalem because he was being chased by Absalom, and after he was informed that one of his top advisors had betrayed him.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nIn this psalm, King David is perhaps alluding to the servants of Saul who pretended to love him, yet, in the end, betrayed him. Alternatively, he may have composed it when fleeing from his son Absalom, who sought to murder him.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-four verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-16, King David requests that his prayers be heard. He expresses fear of his enemies and requests that they be punished. He further laments a betrayal by a trusted friend.
\nIn verses 17-24, he now expresses trust that his prayer will indeed be heard and that salvation will come.<\/p>\n

Technical Terminology:<\/em>
\n\u05e0\u05d2\u05d9\u05e0\u05ea–Neginot<\/em>–Tunes
\n\u05de\u05e9\u05db\u05d9\u05dc–Maskil<\/em>–a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).
\n\u05e1\u05dc\u05d4–Selah<\/em>–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar option is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201cSelah\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em>
\nTo bring retribution against an enemy–Verse 16 states: \u201cMay He incite death against them let them go down into the grave, alive, for evil is their dwelling and within them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nVerse 2 is found in the Vidui (Confession Service), recited on the days leading up to, and including, Yom Kippur. Interestingly, the Vidui service is not recited on Rosh HaShanah itself.
\nVerse 3 is found in the Musaf service of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.
\nVerse 3 is also found in the Kinot (Lamentations of Tishah Be\u2019Av (Fast of the Ninth of Av) in a kinah which speaks of the Crusades.
\nVerse 14 is found in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers ), 6:3.
\nVerse 19 is found in the prayers recited by some following Ma\u2019ariv (evening service) of Motza\u2019ei Shabbat.
\nVerse 24 is found in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), 5:22
\nVerse 24 also comprises one of the verses recited at a siyum–the completion of a masechet (tractate) of Talmud.<\/p>\n

Talmud on Tehillim: <\/em>
\nVerse 19: \u201cHe has redeemed my soul in peace, from impending battle, for the sake of the many that were with me.\u201d
\nThe Talmud, Berachot 8a, deduces from this verse that when a congregation prays together, it is an eit ratzon<\/em>, a time of favor before God.<\/p>\n
