It is from the same period that Purcell was the chief organist at Westminster Cathedral in London. Young Purcell was involved simultaneously with his two main loves: sacred music, and music for the theater. The mutual influence of the two genres is apparent in this work, based on Psalm 54.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The composition is based on verses 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 &#8211; in other words, the entire psalm without the two opening verses, and without verse 7. Each verse receives a short musical treatment, at times a complicated vocal weave, and at times in choral unison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purcell paints each phrase with its own colors, each one different and even opposed to its predecessor.
