David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

When and Why:
David wrote this psalm after he was saved from the inhabitants of the city of Zif, who tried to hand him over to Saul.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
As explained earlier, King David views his personal woes as a parallel to the troubles of the Jewish people. Just as he trusted in God when imperiled by Saul and his men, similarly Israel must trust in God in her times of trouble. Only then will she merit to be saved.

This psalm consists of nine verses, subdivided into two parts.
Verses 1 & 2 serve as a heading.
In verses 3-5, King David prays for God’s salvation, and further asks that his prayer be heard.
In verses 6-9, he expresses his trust that salvation will indeed come.

Technical Terminology:
נגינת–Neginot–Tunes
משכיל–Maskil–a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).
סלה–Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar option is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. They were from the tribe of Judah, as was David, but they didn’t hesitate to betray him. David and his men had taken refuge in the wilderness of Ziph after their escape from Saul. When the Ziphites discovered them, they immediately reported their hideout to Saul. Their treachery was considered even greater than that of Doeg, who was not related to David as were the Zifim (See Psalm 52).

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
