In Psalm 52, King David once again questions God’s plan for the world based on his experiences.\u00a0 Having fallen prey to Doeg, King David laments that the wicked seem to prosper, while the righteous suffer. In Verse 5 he accuses God: “You love evil more than good, and falsehood more than righteousness.”\u00a0 In Hebrew the phrasing is “<\/span>Ahavta ra\u2019 mi-tov, sheker midaber tzedek<\/span><\/em>.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

King David is particular with his wording here as he evokes a passage from Exodus. In the listing of righteous behavior in civil society, God commands not to bribe, not to listen to falsehoods and not bring a righteous or innocent person to their death. In Hebrew, that last commandment is “<\/span>midvar sheker tirchak, v’naki v’tzadik al taharog<\/span><\/em>” translated as “you should distance yourself from falsehood and an innocent and righteous person you should not kill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Notice the matching word usage from Psalm 52- <\/span>sheker<\/span><\/em>– <\/span><\/i>lie, <\/span>midvar<\/span><\/em>– <\/span><\/i>words, and <\/span>tzadik<\/span><\/em>– <\/span><\/i>righteous ones. By referencing the commandment in Exodus, King David is directly challenging God.
