Our psalm opens with \u201c<\/span>When Doeg the Edomite came and informed Saul, telling him, \u2018David came to Ahimelech\u2019s house\u2019\u201d (2). The reference is to an incident reported in 1 Samuel 21-22. David, fleeing from King Saul\u2019s wrath, came to Nob, site of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and home of Ahimelech, the High Priest. In response to Ahimelech\u2019s inquiries, David dissembled, telling him: \u201cThe king has ordered me on a mission, and he said to me, \u2018No one must know anything about the mission on which I am sending you and for which I have given you orders.\u2019 So, I have directed [my] young men to such and such a place\u201d (21:3). In response, Ahimelech provisioned him with the showbread and armed him with the sword of Goliath. This was witnessed by Doeg the Edomite, Saul\u2019s head herdsman (21:8, 22:9), who brought it to his master\u2019s attention. Saul, enraged, accused Ahimelech and all the priests of Nob of treason and ordered their executions, which were carried out by none other than Doeg himself (22:18).<\/span><\/p>\n

Malbim devoted his commentary here (52:2) to demonstrating the truth of the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have already explained (1 Samuel 22) the essence of [Doeg\u2019s] calumny. In truth, David came to the Tabernacle, not to Ahimelech\u2019s home. Doeg heard him say that he was on a mission for the king and was starving\u2026 and failed to tell the priest his real purpose telling him that the king had sworn him to secrecy. He did not request Goliath\u2019s sword, just arms, but took that sword because nothing else was available.<\/span><\/p>\n

From all this, it is clear that the priest acted with sincerity and innocence; Doeg, however, altered the facts, reporting that David had gone to the home of Ahimelech\u2014omitting his title of priest, thereby implying that he had gone to him in his personal capacity rather than in his role as a priest. On this, he based his entire calumny, making it appear to Saul that out of Doeg\u2019s sight David had revealed [to Ahimelech] his secret intent to flee. [Doeg] also altered the sequence of the events, which is why the priests were caught and executed.<\/span><\/p>\n
