David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.

Genre:
Psalm of Individual Lament–This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.

Chapter Summary:
King David speaks against Doeg the Edomite, and in so doing laments all who allow themselves to be misled by their evil inclinations.

This psalm consists of eleven verses, subdivided into two sections.
Verses 1 & 2 serve as a heading.
In verses 3-7, King David rebukes the wicked, evil man for his moral corruption, and further describes his punishment.
In verses 8-11, he records what the righteous will say in their rejoicing in the downfall of the wicked.

Technical Terminology:
משכיל–Maskil–a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).
סלה–Selah–While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar option is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. After Saul disobeyed God’s command to destroy all of Amalek, the prophet Shmuel (Samuel) dethroned Saul and anointed David.
Doeg the Edomite–King Saul’s chief herdsman. Saul was jealous of David and was looking to murder him. When David fled to the priestly city of Nov, near Jerusalem, where the Tabernacle was placed, Achimelech gave him bread and a sword. Doeg reported it to Saul, intimating that Achimelech desired to pronounce David the King over Israel. This aroused Saul’s anger causing him to condemn the entire city of Nov to death.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
