(The others are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6, 32, 38, 102, 130, and 143.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/568\/post\/79911\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our own introduction to Psalms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, we pointed out that not every psalm that purports to be historical is necessarily so. Here, too, we would hasten to note that while the superscription claims it as David\u2019s remorse over his affair with Bathsheba, there is nothing in the psalm that relates specifically to that incident. Moreover, several verses in this psalm are so totally removed from it as to bring the entire superscription into question, such as: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May it please You to make Zion prosper; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem\u201d (20).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, in our comments to 2 Samuel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/274\/post\/60323\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/275\/post\/60345\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we discussed the various views on David\u2019s guilt or innocence of the charges of adultery and murder, leaving open the possibility that he committed no crimes and, consequently, would have had no need to repent. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leaves us with the alternative proposition outlined in our introduction to Psalms, namely, that another penitent, having experienced remorse over his misdeeds, composed this psalm and, perhaps inspired by David, dedicated it to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another element in this psalm that we have seen previously is referenced in the following verses: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not want me to bring sacrifices; You do not desire burnt offerings; True sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit; God, You will not despise a contrite and crushed heart\u201d (18-19). In Psalm 40\u2014entitled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/607\/post\/82984\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoes God Want Sacrifices?\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014we reviewed the evidence of the Prophets on this question and added to it that of the psalm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The immediately previous verse, \u201cO Lord, open my lips, and let my mouth declare Your praise\u201d (17), is recited at the start of the Amidah (aka <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u2019moneh
