She sits in front of a sink furiously washing her hands to cleanse them of an invisible blood. &#8220;Out! Out damn spot!&#8221; she cries. The stain of her sin cannot be washed away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps Shakespeare borrowed this analogy from Psalm 51. David asks God to forgive him for his sin with Batsheba, which also includes a political murder. One of the many themes flowing through the Psalm involves cleansing. Verse 4: &#8221; Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and from my sin cleanse me&#8221; and Verse 9: &#8220;purge me with hyssops, and I will be pure, wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.&#8221; David knows that only through God&#8217;s forgiveness can he be truly cleansed. Unlike Lady Macbeth, David knows going it alone will not remove the stain of his sin. Forgiveness involves an acknowledgement of the sin and asking God to help heal
