David contemplates these questions after sinning with Bathsheba.<\/span><\/p>\n

The affair with Bathesheba took place while the second war with Ammon was being fought, as related in 2 Sam, Ch 11. David feared lest his sin would cause Ammon to overwhelm his own troops, that they would capture his capital city and take the Israelites as slaves. This is why he prayed: <\/span>May it please You to make Zion prosper<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/i>\u00a0In this case, the entire Israelite nation is referred to as Zion, as the prophet Zechariah calls out: <\/em><\/span>Away, escape, O Zion, you who dwell in Fair Babylon!<\/span><\/em> (<\/em>Zech 2:11). He is saying: Although I, personally, because of my sin, do not deserve miracles performed on my behalf, but what of the innocent people of Israel. What sin did they commit? Therefore, on their behalf, strengthen the walls of Jerusalem so that the Ammonites cannot break through them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meaning of these two verses: <\/span>You are just in Your sentence, and right in Your judgment. Indeed I was born with iniquity; with sin my mother conceived me<\/em> <\/span>is to say that although it is true that I sinned and committed evil, nevertheless, in order for God to be righteous with humankind, He must forgive my faults and cleanse me. God must include in His judgment the fact that from the time that Man is conceived in his mother\u2019s womb, the nature that he received includes lust and desire. How could it be hoped that Man would only do good and always control his desires? If God does not forgive my faults and cleanse me for the affair with Bathsheba, people will say about You that You preside over a miscarriage of justice, punishing for no reason. What I did was not done in a rebellious manner to reject Your commandments, rather my desire overwhelmed me, which is why I ask of You, <\/span>Purge me with hyssop till I am pure; wash me till I am whiter than snow.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
