Gregorio Allegri,\u00a0 Miserere 1630<\/span><\/p>\n

The Latin opening of the psalm <\/span>Miserere mei, Deus\u00a0<\/em> <\/span>(\u201cHave mercy upon me, O God\u201d) is the title of a number of works that were composed to David\u2019s penitential plea to wipe away his sin. It is one of the most common psalms in Christian liturgy, and its best known context is \u201cHoly Week\u201d that comes right before Easter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cMiserere\u201d has been set to music many times, but the most famous of these is that of Gregory Allegri (1582-1652), whose performance in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican has become a long-standing tradition. Allegri, who was also a priest, was among the Church composers in Rome, who were committed to the older Renaissance style following Palestrina. That, despite the fact that times had changed and the more dramatic-operatic Baroque style, which integrated musical instruments, had become dominant in other important musical centers (such as Venice). Allegri generally composed a musical setting for the even-numbered verses in the psalm, while the odd-numbered ones were sung in between in the traditional Gregorian chant, in unison. Likewise, there was an ongoing dialogue between a five-voice choir and a four-voice choir, until the end when they sing together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite its conservative spirit, the creation is quite dramatic, mysterious and theatrical, which is also expressed in the lighting and church set design. Even on Youtube, one can get a sense of the tones that float aloft in the huge spaces of the churches of Rome, and of the candles that are gradually extinguished in the Tenebrae ceremony.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The directors of the Sistine Chapel wanted to add another dimension of mystery to the Miserere, and they were able to get a papal order issued, that excommunicated anyone who would circulate the music of the work. But in 1770, the 14-year-old Mozart visited, accompanied by his father, to participate in the prayer, and wrote down from memory the entire composition. Thus an \u201cillegal\u201d copy of the music was created, and was transmitted to the itinerant musical historian Charles Burney. Burney published the tablature in England in 1771, and thus the work was able to be performed in other musical centers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only was Mozart not punished for his deed, but he received a special medal from the pope for his talent. It should be noted that the Mozart-Burney version did not include all sorts of elaborations and embellishments that were performed in Rome, nor the improvised melodies wherein the soprano hits a high \u201cC\u201d several times during the work. These changes and inventions were published only in 1840.<\/span><\/p>\n
