Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915) was a pianist, composer, teacher and theoretician with broad horizons, a student of Tchaikovsky, and later, his close friend. Similar to Tchaikovsky, he merged the Russian spirit with the post-Romantic style of central Europe. His admiration for Bach and the giants of the German classical period was boundless, and he was especially known as one of the great artists of the contrapuntal style, the canon and the fugue, both as a theoretician and as a composer who combined complex polyvocal structures in his works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the Reading of the Psalm\u201d is completely dedicated to Psalm 50, whose monumental scope had ignited the imagination of the Russain theologian and intellectual Aleksey Khomyakov (1804-1860). The poem that he wrote with this name became the lyrics from Taneyev\u2019s creation. Khomyakov, who led a movement to distinguish Russian culture and theology from that of the west, saw in human goodness the basis for a covenant with God. Tenayev\u2019s work is composed of nine movements, and lasts some 70 minutes.
