  1. Nice to meet you, Asaph<\/em>. According to its heading, the psalm is attributed to Asaph. This is the first out of 12 (13 chapters from now we\u2019ll reach the other eleven, in chapters 73-84). According to Chronicles, Asaph was the father of one of the three families of Levites who were appointed by David as musicians in the Temple: \u201cDavid and the officers of the army set apart for service the sons of Asaph, of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied to the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals\u201d (I Chron. 25:1).<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Past, present or future<\/em>? \u201cMy devotees, who made a covenant with Me over sacrifice!\u201d (verse 5). What covenant is being referred to? Is it a covenant from the past – from the days of Hezekiah or Josiah? Or is it perhaps an ongoing cutlic ceremony? Or might it be referring to a vision of renewing the covenant between God and the people in the future? All are possible…<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Like the prophets<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen critiques of the place of sacrifices in religious life in practically all the prophets (see, e.g., Micah 6, Hosea 6, Isaiah 1). They critiqued the cult from a moral point of view. The psalmist here is opposed to the idea that God might have some need for sacrifice.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Who are you – ziz sadai, <\/em>creatures of the field<\/em>? In verse 11, along with \u201cevery bird of the mountains\u201d there are also <\/span>ziz sadai<\/em>, <\/span><\/i>translated here as \u201ccreatures of the field\u201d? In Jewish lore there are some hair-raising descriptions of this, or these, mysterious creature(s) – such as one, when it rises in the air it blots out the sun\u2026 (see Gen. Rabbah 19:4).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
