In this psalm the psalmist declares that he has no need to fear that the troubles that have come upon him from those who set out to ambush him are a punishment for his sin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who rely on their riches believe that if a problem or an accusation come upon him or a member of his family, neither will need to \u2018pay ransom to the judge\u2019 \u2013 because of their comfortable lives they will say \u201cnothing like that will ever happen to me.\u201d And even after they see that everyone dies \u2013 the wise men as well as the foolish and ignorant \u2013 they still believe in their hearts that they will live forever and be remembered forever, since only people who are unsuccessful die like animals and are forgotten. Those who enjoy good fortune will live forever and will never be forgotten. Not only is this their belief, but they pass this attitude on to their children, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The psalmist argues that this is all untrue. Just as sheep are slaughtered for their wool or their abundant fat, these, too, will suffer death in the midst of their plenty and the certainty of their eternal future. Death will bring them down to the depths of <\/span>she\u2019ol<\/span><\/em>, as is written: <\/span>riches hoarded by their owner to his misfortune<\/span><\/em> (Eccl 5:12). Their wealth, which they rely on for strength, will waste away in <\/span>she\u2019ol<\/span><\/em>, where they will suffer all types of terrible torment. The honest ones, however, will arise to a morning of renewal and success.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the torments that the psalmist suffers now serve only to cleanse him of sin, and when he succeeds in purifying himself from sin, his soul will be renewed. Therefore, <\/span>Do not be afraid when a man becomes rich<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>for only as long as he remains alive can he praise himself, and, perhaps, have others flatter him. After he dies, however, he will suffer eternal downfall and disgrace. Those who reach their grave having followed in the evil path of their parents will ultimately realize that they will never again see daylight, for a man who does not understand the value of good deeds will be destroyed like an animal.
