Psalm 49:<\/p>\n

Author:<\/em>
\nSons of Korach–Korach rebelled against his cousins Moses and Aaron and challenged their authority. Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.<\/p>\n

Genre:<\/em>
\nPsalm of Wisdom–This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and are meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\nThis psalm serves as a reminder that there is so much more to life than physical pleasures. Happiness is not measured solely by material wealth, and misery not by a lack thereof. Rather, it is the pursuit of spiritual wealth through which one attains true happiness.<\/p>\n

This psalm consists of twenty-one verses, subdivided into five parts. This first verse serves as a heading.
\nIn verses 2-5, the psalmists inform the reader that the following are words of wisdom, understanding and riddles, to be accompanied by the music of the harp, are directed at all of mankind.
\nIn verses 6-11, they proclaim their trust in God, and remind us that death is the end of all men, from which one cannot be freed with material wealth.
\nIn verses 12-15, they direct their attention to the wealthy who fool themselves into thinking that through their wealth they can achieve eternal life.
\nIn verses 16-21, they again proclaim their trust in God, and repeat the refrain that a man\u2019s wealth is no help to him once he is dead.<\/p>\n

Shimush Tehillim–When to Say:<\/em>
\nFor a fever–Verse 16 states: \u201cBut God will redeem my soul from the [grasp of] the grave, for He will take me [to Himself].<\/p>\n

Where in the Siddur:<\/em>
\nRecited on the Shabbat of Parashat Shekalim (one of the four special readings during the months of Adar and Nisan).
\nRecited following the Shacharit (morning service) and Ma\u2019ariv (evening service) in a house of mourning.
\nRecited at the graveside burial service.
\nVerse 16 is found in the Yizkor<\/em> memorial service recited on Yom Kippur and the Shalosh Regalim<\/em>–the Festivals of Shemini Atzeret<\/em> (eighth day of Sukkot), Pesach, and Shavu\u2019ot.
\nVerse 6 is found in Yesod HaTeshuvah<\/em> (Foundation of Repentance) recited in some congregations on the eve of Rosh HaShana. Some recite Yesod HaTeshuvah<\/em> immediately following Hatarat Nedarim<\/em> (Annulment of Vows).<\/p>\n
