A psalm of the Korahites\u2026\u2019\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.48.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Psalm continues: \u201cThe Lord is great and much acclaimed in the city of our God, His holy mountain \u2014 beautiful view, joy of all the earth, Mount Zion\u201d (verses 2-3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.48.3?lang=bi&amp;p2=Midrash_Tanchuma_Buber%2C_Pekudei.8.7&amp;lang2=bi&amp;w2=all&amp;lang3=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanhuma Buber Pekudei 8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and parallels) relates the story of a trader who went to the Land of Israel in hopes of selling peppers. When he did not manage to sell any, he exclaimed, \u201cIs this indeed the city which Scripture refers to as: \u2018Joy of all the earth\u2019\u201d?! But then, after he did manage to sell all his peppers, he again recited the verse, but in fuller form: \u201cThe Lord is great and much acclaimed in the city of our God, His holy mountain \u2014 beautiful view, joy of all the earth, Mount Zion\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Pesikta_Rabbati.41.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pesikta_Rabbati, Pisqa\u2019 41<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preserves an extensive homily on these verses attributed to the renowned <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">darshan<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Tanhuma bar Abba, who was active in the Land of Israel in the 4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century CE. The expression \u201cbeautiful view \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yefeh nof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d refers to the \u201cbeauty of the bride\u201d (Greek <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qalos ninfi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Another interpretation of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yefeh nof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> understands this expression as referring to \u201cbeauty of branches \u2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anafim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, and goes on to describe Jerusalem as a beautiful fig tree, whose roots are firmly planted in the earth, and rises up with her branches spreading out in every direction, as the future Jerusalem is described in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Ezekiel.41.7?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ezekiel 41:7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A phonetically based midrash understands <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nof<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to refer to the beauty of \u201cthe waving of the Omer\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hanafat ha-omer<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the priest in the Temple in Jerusalem (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Leviticus.23.11?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leviticus 23:11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another interpretation understands <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yefeh nof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as referring to the beautiful way in which the oppressive Nations of the World will be \u201cwaved away\u201d in the future. On the other hand, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yefe nof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may refer to the way everyone beautifies, praises and \u201cwaves \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manifim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (their hands) in acclamation of Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This homily continues with midrashic interpretations of the expression \u201cjoy of all the earth, Mount Zion \u2013 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>mesos kol ha-\u2018aretz har-Tzion<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. This indicates that joy does indeed come from Zion, as it says: \u201c\u2026the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come with shouting to Zion, crowned with joy everlasting. They shall attain joy and gladness\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Isaiah.35.10?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 35:10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2026Indeed, the future salvation shall come from Zion, as it says: \u201cO that the salvation of Israel will come from Zion\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.14.7?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalms 14:7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And the shofar blast which will bring near the redemption of Israel comes out of Zion, as it says: \u201cBlow a horn in Zion\u2026for the day of the Lord has come! It is close\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Joel.2.1?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joel 2:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
