Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.

Genre:
Psalm of Praise–this is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God’s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.
Psalm of Zion–This psalm glorifies God’s city and His holy mount in which He has placed His abode.

Chapter Summary:
The sons of Korach composed this psalm to express the many excellent qualities of the holy city of Jerusalem. Its superiority stems mainly from its being the site of the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple).

This psalm consists of fifteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading.
In verses 2-4, the psalmists praise Zion for its beauty and strength, which in turn is a testimony to God’s greatness.
In verses 508, they describe how even the kings were afraid and trembled at what they saw.
In verses 9-11, they praise the Almighty as the one who dwells in his city.
In verses 12-14, the author calls upon the daughters of Yehudah (Judah) to rejoice and to walk around Zion and encircle her.
In verse 15, they close by declaring that “this is God, our God forever and ever, He will lead us like children.”

Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:
To scare away one’s enemy (say 7 times)–Verse 7 states: “Trembling seized them there, like the pangs of a woman in labor.”

Where in the Siddur:
Recited as the Shir Shel Yom (Psalm of the Day) for Monday.
Verse 2 comprises one of the verses found in the Mishnah (Tamid 7:4), recited after Ein K’Eilokeinu upon the conclusion of Musaf of Shabbat.

Biblical Places:
תרשיש–Tarshish–a seaport, which had a fleet at sea along with the fleet of Hiram. Once in three years the fleet of Tarshish would arrive at the Port of Yafo (Jaffa) bearing gold, silver, ivory, monkeys and parrots.
ציון–Zion–Often used as a synonym for Jerusalem. The term Zion originally referred only to the area where a Jebbusite fortress once stood, also the location of the City of David. Zion was later used by prophets and psalmists to refer to all of Jerusalem.

Talmud on Tehillim:
Verse 2: “Adonoy is great and highly extolled.”
The Talmud, Rosh HaShana 31a, states that this chapter was sung by the Levites every Monday in the Beit HaMikdash (Temple). Indeed, the introductory phrase to Shir Shel Yom (Psalm of the Day), states: “The Levites would recite [the following] in the Beit HaMikdash.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff available on Amazon.

psalms -
