\u201cOn Rosh Hashanah, one recites \u2018All you peoples, clap your hands\u2019\u201d (Sof\u2019rim 19:2). This would appear to be the source of the widespread custom to recite this psalm before the initial shofar blasts preceding the Musaf service. Its association with sounding the shofar is explicit in \u201cGod ascends midst acclamation; the Lord, to the blasts of the horn\u201d (6); its sevenfold repetition probably owes more to mysticism than <\/span>minhag<\/em> <\/span>(custom), seven being a significant typological (symbolic) number.<\/span><\/p>\n

A midrashic tradition has it that \u201cthe sons of Korah\u201d (1), the ostensible authors of this psalm who were spared their father\u2019s ignominious fate (Numbers 26:11), abide in limbo\u00a0 constantly struggling to keep from receding into Hell, which, coincidentally, has seven levels, so our sevenfold repetition of the psalm keeps their spiritual noses above water, so to speak. If the shofar blasts can redeem the souls of such arch sinners as these, surely it will be redemptive for more ordinary people such as ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initial verses summon the nations of the world (\u201call of you peoples\u201d) to acknowledge that \u201cThe Lord Most High is awesome, great king over all the earth\u201d (3). What should motivate them to a conclusion that runs counter to their own beliefs? The answer: \u201cHe subjects peoples to us, sets nations at our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom He loved\u201d (4-5).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea that God\u2019s involvement in history should enlighten even the gentiles to His sovereignty is also demonstrated in the Song at the Sea, which concludes: \u201cYou have brought them and implanted them in the mountain of Your inheritance; You made Your throne secure and fashioned Your sanctuary. The Lord will reign for ever and ever\u201d (Exodus 15:17-18). The psalmist\u2019s use of the divine attribute \u201cMost High\u201d (<\/span>`elyon<\/span><\/em>) as a name for God, however, recalls more specifically the Torah\u2019s description: \u201cWhen the Most High apportioned nations and set apart mortals, He established the boundaries of countries according to the number of the Children of Israel\u201d (Deut. 32:8).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The three parts of the psalm correspond to three \u201ctime zones.\u201d The initial four verses, embodying the past, summon the nations to recognize God. The middle three recognize that, presently, only Israel acknowledges His sovereignty. The final three look to the future in which \u201cthe great of the peoples\u201d and \u201cthe guardians of the earth\u201d will come to accept that God is \u201cgreatly exalted.\u201d Moreover, each section features a form of the attribute \u201cMost High:\u201d `<\/em><\/span>elyon<\/span><\/em> (3), `<\/em><\/span>alah<\/span><\/em> (6) and <\/span>na`alah<\/span><\/em> (10).<\/span><\/p>\n
