Our psalm is recited seven times before the<\/span> Sounding of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah<\/span><\/a>. This is connected to<\/span> verse 6<\/span><\/a>: \u201cGod ascends at the <\/span>teru’ah\u00a0<\/em> <\/span>(a series of short blasts), the Lord, at the sound of the shofar.\u201d This verse is repeated in the<\/span> Shofarot section of the Musaf Amidah on Rosh HaShanah<\/span><\/a>. Shofarot<\/span> concludes<\/span><\/a>: \u201cFor You hear the sound of shofar, and listen to the <\/span>teru’ah<\/span><\/em>;<\/em> and there is none like You. Blessed are You, O Lord, Who hears the sound of the <\/span>teru’ah<\/span><\/em> of His people, Israel, with compassion\u201d.<\/span> Midrash Sekhel Tov<\/span><\/a> interprets this blessing to emphasize that God, hearing the sounding of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, compassionately accepts the prayers of Israel. This Midrash<\/span> elaborates<\/span><\/a> that during all the days of the year, Israel is \u201ccaught in transgressions and entangled in troubles\u201d. But on Rosh Hashanah they are saved by means of a ram\u2019s horn. For when they sound the shofar, they prevail over Satan and are released from his grip, as it says: \u201cGod ascends at the t<\/em><\/span>eru’ah<\/span><\/em>, the Lord, at the sound of the shofar\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Midrash Tehillim<\/span><\/a> dramatizes this verse. On Rosh Hashanah, the Holy One, blessed be He, converts the Measure of Justice (<\/span>Middat Ha-Din<\/span><\/em>) to the Measure of Mercy (<\/span>Middat Ha-Rachamim<\/span><\/em>). God arises to sit in justice (<\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/i>Oleh ba-Din<\/span><\/em>) when the <\/span>Teru’ah<\/em> <\/span>causes Him to ascend in compassion (<\/span>Rachamim<\/span><\/em>), as it says: \u201cGod ascends at the <\/span>Teru’ah<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>the Lord, at the sound of the shofar\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana<\/span><\/i><\/a> answers the question, \u201cWho has ascended the Heavens and descended?\u201d (<\/span>Proverbs 30:4<\/span><\/a>) by citing: \u201cGod ascends at the <\/span>Teru’ah<\/span><\/em>, the Lord, at the sound of the Shofar\u201d. William Braude, in his translation of this text, suggests that people tremble in fear of God\u2019s judgement upon hearing the \u201ctremolo\u201d of the <\/span>Teru\u2019ah<\/span><\/em>. This Midrash adds that God also \u201cdescended\u201d, as it says: \u201cThe Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain\u201d (<\/span>Exodus 19:20<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer<\/span><\/a> comments that, after the sin of the Golden Calf and Moses\u2019 breaking of the First Tablets of the Ten Commandments, on the new moon of Elul, the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded Moses: “Ascend to me on the mount” (<\/span>Exodus 24:12<\/span><\/a>). For, behold, Moses has ascended the mount. So, have the Israelites sound the Shofar throughout their camp, so that they do not go astray again after the worship of idols. The Holy One, blessed be He, was exalted with the sounding of that shofar, as it is said: \u201cGod ascends at the <\/span>Teru’ah<\/span><\/em>, the Lord, at the sound of the shofar\u201d. Therefore, the sages instituted that the shofar should be sounded on the New Moon of Elul every year (<\/span>Tur Orach Chaim
